Macau Tourism
Getting There
Taking a boat to Macau. The boat is called a jetfoil - it operates 24 hours a day, running every half hour during the day and every hour at night, for a $38round-trip ticket.
Getting Around
Macau is only 25.4 square kilometers big, making it easy to navigate by foot. If you're feeling lazy, there are buses and cabs as well.
Getting By
Most of Macau's residents speak Cantonese. Although Macau was once a Portuguese colony, fluency in Portuguese probably won't help you with the locals, although it may help you understand signs and place names. Many locals understand English.
Macau's official currency is the Pataca, which divides into 100 avos. You'll find coins in denominations of 10, 20, and 50 avos, as well as 1, 2, 5, and 10 Patacas; and banknotes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 Patacas. The Pataca is linked to the Hong Kong dollar, with an exchange rate of MOP$103.20 = HK$100.00, while 8 Patacas is equal to 1 U.S. dollar. You won't have a problem exchanging traveler's checks or using a credit card while staying in Macau.
What to Do
Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral - the city's most famous landmark.
Lardo de Senado - A typical Iberian town square right in the middle of the city
Macau Tower - for a great bird's eye view of Macau and Taipa. Check out Penha Church and Guia Fort for great vistas as well.
East India Company Cemetary - A piece of English history in the middle of Macau.
Gambling is Macau's largest industry. You'll want to check out the famous Casino Lisboa, as well as the Gold Sand Casino which opened last year. And it's not like Vegas - signs at the casinos urge players to "chance only what they can afford", and tipping isn't necessary. There are 18 casinos in Macau, and you'll be able to hit several of them just by walking along Avenida de Amizade.
You'll find all-night bars and clubs along the Avenida Sun Yat Sen near the Kum Iam Statue and the Cultural Center. The music is often a worldly mix, given the variety of culture found in Macau. The most popular clubs in town are on Avenida do Infante D. Henrique.
What to Eat
You'll find Cantonese cuisine in abundance in Macau, as well as Portuguese food such as milk pudding, found in the cafes in Largo do Senado. You'll be able to find some barbeque pork strips in street stands around Macau as well. Enjoy a meal at Fernando's on Coloane Island (arrive early, no reservations), or Club Militar.
