''Why are there so few Muslims in Spain, despite the Muslims having a significant presence there for over half a millennium? Did Spain just manage to do a very effective cultural genocide in the southern regions?
Spain managed to do exactly that, yes.
There was a long process of oppression of Muslims and Jews in Spain once the Reconquista was finished. It started with Ferdinand and Isabella, and it ended with Philip III in the early 1600s. Ferdinand essentially outlawed Judaism and Islam in Spain. Jews and Muslims could convert, flee, or die. Many Muslims fled to nearby Muslim nations, while those who couldnÂ’t became moriscos, practicing Christians but retaining their own separate culture. And just as the crown and church remained suspicious of Jewish converts, directing the Inquisition to investigate and kill many former Jews and their descendants, so they distrusted the descendants of former Muslims. And in 1609, Philip ordered that the last of the moriscos be expelled, essentially removing not just Islam but people whose culture hearkened back to Islam from Spain.''
