DO IT! Snacka med dem. Fråga vad de tycker!
My name is XXX(min editering), a law graduate Thai, who is a friend of Mr.AlexxxZ. Since there seem to be a misunderstanding here about the definition of a well-known word 'Farang'( I experienced that itÂ’s known as FALANG for most of you , of course thereÂ’s no English Alphabet that is close to “ร”, but in my point of view “R” is perfect for it.),which some of you think that it is NEGATIVE, as I am Thai whose first language is Thai and educated in Thai usage, I would like to explain about the definition of this word.
With my little knowledge and experience from being and speaking THAI for my whole life, the word FARANG had been used for the first time hundred years ago. According to Thai history, people from overseas came to visit Thailand for so many purposes trading, colonization, for instance. Thai people, Siamese at that time, didn't have a word to call them, however, there're some theories about the root of this words which go to the same way that the word Farang is a mispronouncing, or our Tinglish. If you try to pronounce it you would find that the word 'Farang' has the same structure as Foreign in English, Francias in French (funny thing is Thai people call France, French (which is FRANCIAS in French , I guess ) "FA-RANG-SED" ). However, there're some other languages which the specialists believe that would be the root of this word.
Nowadays, we still use the word FARANG to call the Caucasians, Scandinavian, and people from western world. Farang for ordinary Thai people is the informal word to call these white foreigners. We have the formal word for all the foreigners even if they’re white, black, or Asian, that is ‘Chao-Dhang-Chart’ (sorry for my lack of phonetic writing skill, I don’t use it in my everyday life).
I donÂ’t argue your opinion that Thai people call the WHITE people Farangs, because thatÂ’s so true. But , with respect, I totally DISAGREE about the negative definition. Due to the fact stated all above and actually I have gathered my friends and other people(I even called my Thai teacher to get some info!!) opinion and all of them agree that , in general, people just use this word with every white people , male and female , whatever they do here, and how ever they are.
Anyway, some might say FARANG for negative meaning in some context, normally always be “I”,”AI” or “E” in front of the word, for example ‘ AI FARANG+swear word’ which means ( sorry for being rude in public forum) ‘F**king Farng’.
To sum up, The term FARANG isn’t wildly used to PICK ON any particular people in bad way, so the word FARANG itself just refers to “FOREIGNER”, and there’s nothing NEGATIVE at all.
I write this note just to defend my gorgeous native language, and I really hope that some of you would at least read and understand it, and next time you hear someone call you Farang please donÂ’t think that they mean anything bad.
Thank you for your attention. Hope you will enjoy your trips or living in Thailand.
If there is any question about the source of facts states in the article please donÂ’t hesitate to leave your question. I am not a member of this forum but my friend will be happy to pass your question to me.
Best Regards.
P.S. Tip fir anyone who is studying Thai Farang refers to GUAVA too !!
